Delivery or Birthing Methods: Last Phase of Pregnancy!

Maternity

The last leg of the pregnancy process is to finally hold ones healthy baby for the first time. A pregnant lady can give birth to her baby through, a normal (vaginal) delivery or through a Caesarean section (C-section) delivery.

Though the normal delivery is considered the preferred way, yet at times C-section is the safer and a life-saving method for the baby or mother or both.

Some of the Pros & Cons of the two common Delivery Methods for a Mother:

Normal delivery:

A normal delivery is a natural and a long process with, in most cases long hours of labor pain, however, a mother who has given birth to a baby naturally has a shorter stay at the hospital.

  • Normal delivery is not a surgery, hence the recovery is faster.
  • During a normal delivery process, there is a possibility of the tissues around the vagina to tear. In this case, the mother is given stitches and at the same time, this delivery process could also make her pelvic area weak.
  • Mothers who have had their 1st baby through normal delivery, prefer the same while delivering their 2nd baby or more. Similarly, in the case of mother’s who have had their 1st baby through C section prefer that over the normal delivery.
  • If the baby is not in the head down position (breech baby), at the time of delivery it is extremely risky as the larger part of the baby’s body (head) will come out last.
  • For a normal delivery where it is not induced labor and the baby completes its whole gestation period, all its organs are fully developed and are naturally ready for birth.

Delivery through a C Section:

delivery

  • When the baby is too large and the mother has a small pelvis, it becomes difficult and painful for the mother in normal delivery. Hence a C-section is as an option through which the mother goes through minimal pain and has a safe delivery.
  • When a mother is pregnant with twins or multiple babies, it is preferred to have a C-section.  This saves the mother from going through the delivery pain for twins or multiple babies.
  • In case the mother is suffering from diabetes or blood pressure, C-section is recommended. This ensures the fitness of the mother and baby.
  • The ideal position of a baby to have a normal delivery is the head down position. However, at times the baby is not in the ideal position at the time of delivery. This may require the doctor to perform a C-section.
  • Some mothers opt for a planned C-section delivery. This is when they plan to have the baby on a specific date. This decision is taken by some couples who believe in lucky dates/number. This may lead to underdeveloped organs if the gestation period is not completed.
  • During C-Section, the discharge time is normally 4-5 days.

PRO & CONS FOR A BABY:

Normal Delivery:

delivery

  • The delivery recovery period for a mother who has had a normal delivery is lesser. She can start breastfeeding the baby right after the delivery as compared to a mother who has had a C section.
  • Babies born through normal delivery may not suffer breathing problems at birth. This is because during delivery processes the muscles involved tend to push out the liquid found in the babies lungs.
  • In some cases, the baby is large. If the mother insists on having a normal delivery, there is a high risk of the baby getting injured in the process.
  • Sometimes in the urge of having a normal delivery causes risk to the baby. If not monitored properly by the doctor, the baby born could be a special baby or even a stillborn baby.

C Section Delivery:

delivery

  • Babies have a possibility of developing breathing problems at birth if delivered through a C Section.
  • At times C section is the best way of having a baby, as it causes lesser pain.
  • Since a C Section is a surgery, the surgery risks are always there for the mother and the baby.

Irrespective of the way a mother delivers her baby, it is important to have a healthy and normal baby along with a healthy mother. The decision at the time of the baby’s birth either normal or C section will be a memory to cherish. But, any wrong move can cause health hazards or life risks for the mother or child.
