In Medical Language, Thyroid is explained as a Small Butterfly-shaped gland found at the base of the neck. It is located below the Adam’s apple wrapped around the windpipe. This gland makes Thyroid hormone which travels in our body in the blood. The Thyroid hormone controls the metabolism of our body of how fast calories are burnt and how fasts our heart beats. Thyroid, a disease is the most common problem that can occur either due to over or under-function of the thyroid gland.

Its Causes, Symptoms, and treatment

Thyroid Disease is caused by the inappropriate TSH levels or may occur as a result of problems in the thyroid gland itself.  Some of the common symptoms of Thyroid are the weakness, weight gain, hair loss, depression, constipation, confusion, dry and scaly skin, irritability etc. Thyroid disease can be treated either through Medication or a surgery. It can also be treated through a Radioiodine therapy. It helps to shrink the thyroid gland or destroy the thyroid cells to a great extent.

Certain foods and fruits for managing Thyroid

Everyone is aware of the fact that a healthy diet can cure many diseases and so is in the case of Thyroid. Balanced and the right choice of food helps to recover fast and in a healthy manner. This can be done without any side effects but only if consumed in a right and appropriate quantity. What we eat plays a major role in our lives.

People suffering from Thyroid disorder must add following foods and fruits in their diet:

  • Fish:

Fish which is a rich source of nutrients contains Omega fatty acid which is an excellent source to consume during Thyroid problems.

  • Seaweed:

Iodine is something which helps to cure thyroid in its most beneficial way. Seaweeds have a high concentration of iodine which acts as an essential nutrient for Thyroid function. However, this is applicable only if taken in the right quantity as an excess of it can also worsen the situation.

  • Nuts:

  • Milk and Yogurt:

Much of the Iodine intake in our diet comes from dairy products like milk and Yogurt. Simply by consuming one cup of low-fat milk helps to meet the iodine requirement of our body. Dairy Products also helps us to fulfill Vitamin D deficiency which indirectly is a reason for Thyroid problems.

  • Chicken and beef:

Another key nutrient which our body needs to fight against the thyroid disease is Zinc. Chicken and beef which are rich in zinc are a good source in curing Thyroid.

  • Eggs:

An egg contains around 16% Iodine and 20% of the selenium which is all needed for the day, making it one of the superfoods for people having a Thyroid disorder.

  • Berries:

Berries are the best diet in case of a thyroid disease as they are chockfull of antioxidants.

Below are certain foods and fruits which can worsen the Thyroid Problem to a major extent.

  • High Sugar Intake/Sugary Food
  • Junk Food
  • Processed Food
  • Deep Fried Food
  • Veggies like Cauliflower, cabbage, Spinach
  • Excessive consumption of Green tea.

Hence all the above should be avoided for a healthy and early cure.
