Ways to assist your Child in discovering his/her Passion!

Parenting

What is happening today is not particularly new. Parents in their lives have seen a lot of things and have gone through many experiences. This is what has led them to form an opinion of what is actually right, what is wrong, what is better and what is worse. At times parents are opinionated about medical being the best future for their child, while in some cases they might think about engineering is the best field. At times they are looking towards a Civil officer while at other times they are looking at professors. All this has led them into pushing their kids towards a particular path. What does that result in? It results in suppression of the one thing that can make your child the ultimate winner in life, that is Passion.

What is Passion? How to go about it with kids?

It’s an often-misunderstood term, but actually, Passion means to be enthusiastic and feel extreme excitement towards something. It does not mean becoming successful. It is merely a feeling of strong liking towards something. It does not mean that your child will be guaranteed a six-figure salary, but it does guarantee that no matter where your child is, he will be extraordinarily satisfied with his life and be living without regrets. Passion is not stagnant and does not remain fixed upon one thing. As kids grow, they are exposed to new things which alters the direction of their passion.

Passion/Specialization

But these days the word Passion is often confused with Specialization especially among parents. If a child is great at one particular thing or activity, then parents build the life of the kid around that activity. This usually inhibits the child from growing and discovering new things. Being centered around one goal so early in life can often shift the kid’s mental perception for the worse. The kid might be specialized in that activity but he might not really be passionate about it. This is often a recipe for future problems.

Expose them!

Best thing to do about it is to give them time to grow. When a child is exposed to different people, cultures, subjects, careers, situations, lessons, ideas, innovations etc. the child himself starts creating his own scenarios which usually involves one or more dearest topics and activities of his interest. Eventually, the child is able to shortlist two of the most important things in his life. Gradually, the decision for one is achieved. That is when the child grows up and takes the decision to follow a certain path into his career and make his future there. This will ensure that your child is sure of his decision, takes the decision of his own will, decides his own future, thereby guaranteeing the happiness and satisfaction of his life ahead.

What strategies can help in aiding kids to follow their passion?

To aid you in helping your child better in following his passion, these strategies have been devised:

  • Knowing the unique interests of the child

The key to getting to know your child is to observe. Observe what they do in free time, what they like to talk about. Talk to them and encourage them to share their experiences and dreams. Ask questions and start discussions. Be open about all topics the child wishes to discuss. State his/her curiosity.

  • Think out of the box

Do not be stuck on something. If you are aware of a few organized and safe activities, does not mean that this will be the scope of your child’s activities. Let him explore. Let him take risks. Let him play a little out of the safe cocoon and experience the things on his own. That is what opens the child to learn more.

  • Nurture Optimism

It is often observed that upon a small failure, parents are often too angry at children, irrespective of the age. This results in a judgment that failure means wrong and winner always takes all. That is the kind of opinion that needs to be flushed out. Raising optimism in children is important. Teaching them that failure is not always something to let down but something to make you learn in order to rise up once again, is the kind of optimism every kid must have to ensure healthy encouragement for success in future. That is how children start building their confidence and ultimately find their passions.

  • Avoid Judgement

Parents often feel that if they couldn’t pursue what they wanted in life, then their kids must fulfill those dreams. But that is extremely negative philosophy. It might be that what you had been passionate about, your child is not. Your child may have his own passions. Therefore, instead of pressurizing your child into following into your footsteps and your judgment, it is best to let them choose their own passions in life. If they coincide with yours, then that’s truly awesome, otherwise, encourage them to make their own choices in life and be happy.

Therefore, assisting your child in finding and following his/her passion is the key to your child’s happiness in life. Though his passion may not be recognized early on, it must not be hurried on. Giving time to children in looking at all options and finding the right path, is the best strategy for success.
